MONET Trainee Professional Development Survey

We are committed to providing and communicating training opportunities but realize that many students and postdocs are already getting exposure in some areas through other channels.

The purpose of this survey is to identify where we should provide further programming for professional development.

Scientific Breadth

MONET has provided or facilitated Scientific Breadth (interdisciplinary training and collaboration in polymer network chemistry) programming through:

  • Monthly Center-wide meetings,

  • Periods of small group discussions at those meetings,

  • Opportunities for collaboration,

  • Facilitation of small group synergy sessions,

  • Funding trainee exchange visits,

  • Supporting travel to the International Summer School in Soft Matter—Corsica, and

  • Advertising educational opportunities in the newsletter.

How satisfied are you with the current level of programming in Scientific Breadth?

Innovation/Entrepreneurship

MONET has provided or facilitated Innovation/Entrepreneurship programming through:

  • Informal discussions at monthly meetings,

  • Industry Panel Discussion at past meetings,

  • Connections with the Community Resource for Innovation in Polymer Technology (CRIPT), and

  • Access to Past Workshop Materials

  • Advertising innovation updates and opportunities in the newsletter.

I meet MONET’s goals for Innovation exposure if:

  1. I understand that I should be on the lookout for possible innovation opportunities that come out of my research;

  2. I know how to inform my institution’s translation office about work that might contain useful intellectual property;

  3. I understand that when work involves inventors for multiple institutions, one institution can elect to pursue IP even if another opts not to; and,

  4. I understand the sequence of provisional patent filings and converting a provisional patent to a patent application.

How satisfied are you with the current level of programming in Innovation/Entrepreneurship?

Outreach/Informal Science Communication

MONET has provided or facilitated Outreach/Informal Science Communication programming by:

  • Sharing outreach and ISC practices in DISCO moments,

  • Providing opportunities to participate in the Art of Polymers partnership with Multiverse,

  • Creating the MONET Outreach Kit sent to each lab, and

  • Offering mentorship and support through our Director of Innovation, Outreach, Diversity, and Education.

How satisfied are you with the current level of programming in Outreach/Informal Science Communication?

Scientific Leadership

MONET has provided or facilitated Scientific Leadership programming by:

  • Sharing evidence-based best practices in our DISCO moments,

  • Protecting time for trainee-led climate discussion at previous meetings,

  • Two rotating trainee positions in the Center Leadership Team, and

  • Facilitating panel discussions in prior meetings.
